DOLINA KOCIELISKA is one of the most beautiful and best-known valleys of the Tatras. It extends north-south for approximately 9 km across the Polish Tatras. On the right side of the road leading to the valley, there is a little chapel erected by mineworkers who were settled in the valley to extract and process the iron ore that had been found there in the 18th century. The narrow part of the valley is flanked by groups of rocks of various shapes. Local tales related to these geological formations abound: one of them tells that the arch-like rock called "Bandits' Window" served as an observation post from where the famous Jánoík kept watch on his persecutors' movements.
