LIPTOVSKÝ HRÁDOK / Liptóújvár (Hradek) is a fossed stronghold at the confluence of the Belá and Váh rivers. The castle was built by order of the royal officer in charge of Zólyom County (Hung. ispán < Slav. župan; Lat. comes) after 1316 and for a long time was a demesne of the Crown. The castle was destroyed during the war of independence of 1703-1711. Liptovský Hrádok village, a 30 minute walk from the ruins, housed the first school of forestry in Europe; it was founded by Franz Wiesner von Morgenstern. Liptovský Hrádok had 400 Slovak inhabitants in the 1850s. From the village one can have a fine look over the High Tatras and the Kriváň peak (2494 m).
