The ruins of LIKAVA / Likava castle stand on a peak of the Chočské vrchy on the right side of the Váh. Neither the date of its construction nor the name of its first owner could be established. Some maintain that it was built for the Knights Templar, others argue that its first owner was Master Thomas of Csókakő, steward of the royal household (Hung. ajtónállómester; Lat. magister ianitorum regalium) and royal officer in charge of Liptó County. (Hung. ispán < Slav. upan; Lat. comes.) In 1315 the castle was given by King Charles Robert I of Anjou to Master Doncs, who had it repaired and enlarged. At the end of the 17th century it was a demesne of the Crown and was used as a county jail as well. Likava was pulled down by order of Ferenc Rákóczi during the war of independence of 1703-1711.
