Michalovce / Nagymihály / Großmichel lies in the valley of the Laborec river. In the 1850s it was a market town with ca. 2000 inhabitants. The Sztáray mansion was built on the site of the old castle of the Nagymihályi family. Although in the past it was rebuilt many times, its fundamental reconstruction took place only in 1809, according to plans drafted by Heinrich Koch the Elder (1781-1861). It was considered one of the most beautiful and most comfortable mansions in that area. - The 130 km long Laborec / Laborc takes its source in the Nízke Beskydy at the northern borderline of Zemplén County. Having reached the plain, the river flows parallel with the Ondava, which it joins at Parchovany. Its left-side tributary is the Uh. - Bibliography: Izakovičová, Nagymihály, Zemplén
